The Music of 2011

Sigh. ‘Tis been quite a year. Here is some of the music that has gotten me through it:

Beware, get ready to clickety click. Lots of links B).

20. CULTS - Cults

Welp for one, I can remember ranting about these guys way back when… and now they have a website and now can be found. Plus they did this video.

19. WHEN SAINTS GO MACHINE - Konkylie

They’re what I like to call the: “Danish Boyz II Men.” Their harmonies are brilliant, and are claimed to be just as good live. Hope to see them soon actually. Watch this.

18.5 GOYTE - Somebody That I Used to Know

Mmmmmmmm. He did this video. So I pretty much only liked this song from his newest album, which is why it is #18.5.

18. Bombay Bicycle Club - A Different Kind of Fix

These guys are alright. Watch.

17. KIMBRA - Settle Down

Naturally, since she was featured in Goyte’s new song. But that song doesn’t exhibit what she is really capable of. What I like about her is she has genuine talent, and it’s not glazed over or overproduced.  Check here.  and then here.

16. BEYONCÉ - 4

I know. it is unexpected, even for me. She came out with this video. And this one.

15. ADELE - 21

Clickety click. She’s got a killer voice and is not a phony.

14. REAL ESTATE - Days

So their music is just super chill, and uncomplicated. I figure we all need more of this type of thing in our lives. This video is from last yeara/an older album, but it’s my favorite.

13. BATTLES - Glass Drop

Two words: THIS VIDEO. And the drum god, John Stainer.

12. OH LAND - Oh Land

For one, She is wearing not one, BUT TWO beige flamingo heads, and still looks fabulous.  Secondly, this song.

11. tUnE-yArDs - W H O K I L L

This is just amazing. She is just amazing. This album is incredible, and completely non-conforming. B)

10. THE DØ - Both Ways Open Jaws

There’s a beautiful kind of strangeness… here.
_____________________________________________________________________________________

9. LYKKE LI - Wounded Rhymes

Because she and I were born on the same day and are the same age -but mostly because her stuff is always raw and honest. Watch. and Look.

8. FLEET FOXES - Helplessness Blues
This video is yet another visual masterpiece and they sound like folk-angels still, this album is a bit more dark.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
7. BIBIO - Mind Bokeh

This. And he did a sah-weet Simon & Garfunkel cover. Also google the word “bokeh,” and you’ll discover why this is a beautiful and very fitting name for his newest album.

6. M83 - Hurry Up We’re Dreaming

Hurry up we’re dreaming? This song is a dream. Bonus points for including the sax ;).
_____________________________________________________________________________________
5. THE DRUMS - Portamento
Have you heard of this thing called music? Well this band, they’re called “The Drums” not to be confused with the instrument. Occasionally, they sound like the Beach Boys or The Smiths. But I am A-OK with this, and you should be too.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
4. ST. VINCENT - Strange Mercy
She’s crazy talented! And “Cruel” really hit home with me.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
3. LANA DEL REY
Have you seen this? OR this? OR THIS!?!?!? Soooo… no album just yet, but I am looking forward to it very much in early 2012!
_____________________________________________________________________________________
2. **JAMES BLAKE - James Blake

What girl can resist a mug like that? More importantly what human being can resist a voice like this?

1. **BON IVER-Bon Iver
Honestly, who did you think would be my #1? He is a shining beacon… a gem in the rough-of the state-which is Wisconsin. (Did that make sense? I don’t care.) Midwest represent! There is something absolutely lovely, and at the same time, oddly familiar about this guy and his music. With videos like this. and then THIS?!?!
_____________________________________________________________________________________

**Note: These two boys did one song together in 2011… Imagine being serenaded by dolphins.
